Porsche committed themselves to a full blown re-thinking of the car for the 1998 race, as the FIA and ACO abandoned the rule that GT1 vehicles need to be based on a production car. Created to match the Toyota GT-One particular and Mercedes CLK-GTR, the 911 GT1 ‘98 featured radical modifications to the bodywork and a new sequential gearbox. In 1998, in spite of improvements to the vehicle, the privately entered Porsches proved to be no match for the functions CLKs which also were enhanced. This was also due to the air-restrictor guidelines being regarded as unfavourable to the turbo engine. The Michelin tyres of the factory team and specifically the Pirelli of Zakspeed had been regarded as inferior to the Bridgestone of Mercedes, which also would dominate in F1 for numerous years.

At Le Mans, it was a distinct story. The new BMW V12 LM retired with wheel bearing difficulty, and the Mercedes CLK-LM automobiles had oil pump troubles in the new V8 engines that replaced the former V12. The Toyota GT-One particular was really quickly but also suffered gearbox reliability problems.
The revised 1998 model, in spite of getting slower than the Toyota or the Mercedes, fulfilled Porsche’s slim hopes, taking both 1st and second spot overall thanks to reliability, giving Porsche its record-breaking 16th overall win at Le Mans, more than any other manufacturer in history.
At Petit Le Mans race in Road Atlanta, the 911 GT1 ‘98 of Yannick Dalmas made a spectacular backward flip and landed rear initial ahead of hitting the side barriers, as did the BMW V12 LMR at the identical race in 2000, and most infamously the Mercedes-Benz CLR at Le Mans in 1999.
The GT1 ‘98 was set up with larger downforce in the race than the prior two years, which decreased its race maximum speed to 310 km/h (193 mph). However, in the 1998 Le Mans 24 Hours test days, the car hit 330 km/h (205 mph) on the Mulsanne Straight on a lower downforce setup.

Driving through town after the snow had stopped. Traction control and snow tires make it a pretty good time. The yellow flashing light tells me that traction control is doing something.

They’ve been outstanding this winter. Between those and the car’s amazing balance and traction control it’s been a great winter for driving. Run-flat snows are a bit pricey but I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t want to deal with a flat in the middle of winter.
