I went to a BMW event today and had a chance to drive this car, a 2011 BMW 650i. (I also got to drive a 328i but it did not push the envelope for my understanding of a 3 series, which is a well-balanced but otherwise not overwhelming car.)
The 6, on the other hand, was really astounding. And for the 0k price tag attached to the copy I drove, it absolutely should have been.
There were a lot of quality things but my drive was short enough that I didn’t notice too much of that. What I did notice was that its ride was phenomenal. Its 8-speed automatic was also astounding–literally the first automatic I enjoyed driving. (It could be a manumatic, which would explain the amazing torque feel.)
But the best part was, by far, the twin turbo V8, which was like being bungeed to a freight train doing 120mph. I’ve been in 400+hp cars before and the power delivery isn’t nearly as smooth or grunty as what the 650i packed. I had a few panic moments when trying out the accelerator on the freeway.
I’m in no position to buy this car but the event was fun. This is the first one I’ve been to since the world financial episode. I had gone to two prior (one by BMW and one by Audi) and all of them have been a hoot.
